Team Kernel | Week 1

We’ve begun to develop our concept for Tuesdays pitch, and we’ve decided to go with something everyone knows and loves:

popcorn!

but not just any popcorn, pickle-flavored popcorn.

One of the major tasks I’ve been working on is developing our pipeline for the project. I’ve been interested in USD in the past, and have used it on a few projects before, but it’s always been contained in Solaris in Houdini. Now, were taking USD and applying it all throughout our pipeline.

Heres a little chart we’ve drafted up that displays our workflow. As part of my tasks this first week, I tested out our pipeline by creating an asset in maya and setting up textures for it and then bringing it into Solaris and getting it rendered in Karma. I’ve also done this with cameras from Maya, so our camera, layout, animation and even lighting can be done in Maya and easily transferred over to Houdini for rendering and FX.

Along with researching our pipeline, we’ve also been gathering references for the FX we plan on including in our project. Theres going to be lots of popcorn.

A few of the effects I’m gonna be responsible for are: A procedural popcorn popping system, some rigid body dynamics, and, if I get time, some pyro and pop simulations. I was hoping to have some tests done in this first week, but was occupied with getting our pre-vis and mp4 video together. Throughout this next week I’ll begin my research and development.

I spent a lot of time this week working with my team to develop our pre-vis. I was responsible for some of the 3D aspects inset in the corners, which I animated in Maya. I wanted to animate in Maya so we could test our pipeline.
